How Languages are Learned

I sometimes ask students in my classes what they believe how they learn languages or learned the languages they speak including their native language. However, terminology to speak about language/s is often not very well known, even the definition of what a native speaker is and what makes him or her different to a second language learner does not always seem to be clear.

Admittedly, the definition of words, expressions or concepts are not always clear-cut; they have ‘fuzzy edges’ and might even be matters of debate. Sometimes we believe to know what a concept means intuitively, but when we start to explain we sometimes realize that things are not as straightforward and clear as we thought.
